Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport

For most travelers Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (pronounced "su-wan-na-poom") International Airport (airline code BKK) will be their entry point to the Kingdom of Thailand.

Located in Racha Thewa in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province, 30 kilometers east of Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi International Airport became fully operational on September 28, 2006 and is the world’s third largest single-building airport terminal and has the world’s tallest control tower.

With two parallel runways, two parallel taxiways and 130 passport control "arrival" checkpoints and 72 "departure" checkpoints, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport has the capacity to handle 76 flights per hour.

Occupying 3,100ha (7,600 acres) Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport houses 460 check-in counters, 107 moving walkways, 102 elevators and 83 escalators, and has parking for more than 5,000 cars. It has the capacity to handle 45 million passengers and three million tons of cargo per year.

Once clearing border control and customs formalities, passengers can connect to a range of domestic or international flights in the one terminal, or choose from a range of public and private transport options to get to downtown Bangkok. Downtown transportation services include public and private buses, private car rental agencies, airport limousine services, and public taxi’s.

Get Me To travel tip: People exiting the passenger arrival area are advised to avoid engaging the services of unlicensed tour guides or taxi drivers. Public taxi’s are available from the ground floor arrival level near entrances 3,4,7, and 8. Taxi’s servicing Suvarnabhumi International Airport must be less than five years old and the public taxi counter will issue you with a docket outlining your destination and the taxi number. Bangkok taxis are obliged to use their meter with the approximate cost of a public taxi from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to downtown Bangkok being Bt300 plus any expressway tolls (about Bt100).
