Victory Monument, Bangkok:
Victory monument in the Ratchathewi district is one of the most un-Thai like statues and monuments to be found throughout the kingdom.
The towering obelisk formed from the shape of five vertically raised bayonets atop a pentagon, with statues representing the army, navy, air force, police, and civilian bureaucracy, amply herald its western design.
Erected in 1941 to commemorate Thailand’s “victory” over the French during the two months of December 1940 and January 1941, the monument today sits in the middle of what is probably Bangkok’s busiest traffic junction.
Six major roads intersect at the Victory Monument junction and it is a major terminus for Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) buses. Many private van services traveling to outer suburbs and regional locations also use the junction as a picking-up and dropping-off point.
Making a large loop around the outer edge of the circle and snaking it’s way between large screen digital advertising displays, the BTS Skytrain also stops at Victory Monument on it’s way to and from the Chatuchak weekend market and Mo Chit Bus Terminal, taking on and disgorging a steady stream of passengers.
